I’ve sat next to a lot of awesome people on planes as I travel nearly every week. I’ve sat next to athletes, musicians, CEO’s and great people. Monday, I was delayed three times; tired, pissed and ready for a nap. As soon as I sat down, the elderly man next to me asked how I was doing. I wanted so badly to put my AirPods in and ignore the world, but I was raised right and responded to all of his questions. He asked about my life, my family and what I did. I told him about my life and he silently listened. I had no idea who I was talking to.
This man is one of 65 people alive who has a Medal of Honor. This man took out an entire machine gun den. This man was shot in the face. This man saved an entire squad. The book and movie “We Were Soldiers” was about his unit.
By the end of the flight I was damn near in tears realizing how selfish I was for not caring about anyone around me and just wanting to be in my own world. I wish our flight could have been longer because I had so many questions that have been left unsanswered. I gave him a hug and a handshake.
I asked him for his card and asked if I could stay in touch and he said he had something better. I gave him my business card and he gave me this. “For those who have gone before us”…. Bless you Joe.
